Two years after its historic mission, the world is finally uncovering the secrets of SORA-Q, the Transformers-inspired rover that ventured onto the Moon. This tiny, spherical robot, weighing just 250 grams and measuring 80 millimeters wide, has provided invaluable insights into the challenges and possibilities of small-scale space exploration. SORA-Q's journey began with a unique collaboration between the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and researchers from Doshisha University, Sony, and TakaraTomy, blending the worlds of space exploration and toy design.
What makes SORA-Q truly remarkable is its ability to transform. It can switch between a robot and a car, thanks to off-center wheel rotations and transformation mechanisms borrowed from toy design. This adaptability is crucial for navigating the Moon's varied terrain, where traditional, larger robots might struggle. During its mission, SORA-Q encountered a setback when its companion, the SLIM lander, ended up lying face down on the lunar surface due to a thruster failure. Despite this, SORA-Q proved its resilience, capturing images of the lander and its surroundings, aiding in the diagnosis of SLIM's condition.
Despite its small size, SORA-Q's capabilities are impressive. It can navigate autonomously, equipped with sensors and image processing software, and even has anomaly detection and recovery mechanisms. The rover captured 12 high-resolution images, though some data was lost during transmission. Its short-lived mission, lasting only 100 minutes, was deemed a success, and it has already influenced the design of future miniature rovers.
The researchers behind this study envision a future where small rovers like SORA-Q work alongside larger, more powerful robots. These tiny sidekicks could access cramped spaces, such as small vents and craters, that are off-limits to their larger counterparts. By combining the reliability of larger robots with the flexibility and lightweightness of smaller ones, we might see more efficient and cost-effective missions to the Moon and other celestial bodies.
