Strongbox Theater: A New Cultural Hub in East Rockaway (2026)

Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway, a long-awaited cultural hub, is finally opening its doors after a six-year renovation journey. This ambitious project, initiated by husband and wife team Tony Leone and Marla D'Urso, has transformed an abandoned East Rockaway National Bank and Trust Company into a vibrant performing arts space. With a soft launch of their bar/lounge on Thursday night, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a one-act play festival from July 31 to August 16, Strongbox is poised to become a cornerstone of the local arts scene.

Leone and D'Urso's vision for Strongbox is to create a community gathering space, encouraging people to disconnect from their devices and engage in face-to-face interactions. The theater, accommodating around 90 people, will host a diverse range of performances, including plays, comedy shows, concerts, and open mic nights. The bar will offer cocktails, small plates, and desserts, providing a social hub before and after the shows. A unique feature is the preserved bank vault, now an integral part of the bar's design, adding a touch of history to the modern space.

The renovation process, however, was not without its challenges. Initially estimated to cost a modest seven figures, the project eventually required double that amount, with the couple citing issues like a change of architects three years into the project. D'Urso and Leone's determination to see the project through, despite the obstacles, is a testament to their passion and dedication. They believe that Strongbox will serve as a launchpad for aspiring Broadway actors and local musicians, aiming to revive Long Island's once-thriving original music scene.

As Strongbox Theater prepares for its grand opening, it promises to be a significant addition to East Rockaway's cultural landscape, offering a unique blend of history, art, and community engagement. With its blend of architectural heritage and modern amenities, Strongbox is set to become a destination for arts enthusiasts and a catalyst for local talent.
