A new technology project at the University of Wollongong (UOW) is generating excitement in the scientific community, offering a potential breakthrough in the field of drug development. Led by Dr. Alex Mason, a chemist and group leader at UOW's Molecular Horizons biomedical research institute, this project aims to revolutionize the way we grow and study human cells, particularly in the context of motor neurone disease (MND).
Dr. Mason's project is inspired by the natural process of embryonic development, where stem cells multiply and differentiate into various cell types. He proposes using synthetic cell technology, which he has been developing for a decade, to enhance lab-grown stem cells. These synthetic cells, 3D-printed and designed to mimic the chemical signals of the embryo, can potentially become more accurate representations of human tissues.
The significance of this technology lies in its ability to provide a more human-like environment for drug testing. Currently, animal testing is the primary method, but it has its limitations. Approximately 90% of drugs fail in clinical trials after passing animal trials, and the figure can be as high as 19 in 20 for certain diseases like MND. Dr. Mason argues that human cell-based models have the potential to bridge this gap, offering a more reliable and ethical approach.
The project has already received a $200,000 grant from the NSW government, recognizing its potential to reduce animal testing. Dr. Mason and his team, including Dr. Dzung Do-Ha, an expert in stem cell technologies, are optimistic about the initial results. They plan to start in-cell testing soon and aim to demonstrate the core principle's effectiveness by the end of the year.
Dr. Mason's vision extends beyond the project's immediate outcomes. He envisions a future where this technology becomes a standard tool for researchers, enabling them to create their own stem cell models. His ultimate goal is to accelerate the drug discovery process, ensuring that new therapies and drugs can be tested rapidly in human-like models, leading to faster patient access to effective treatments.
